Hailing from a small village in north India, Susheela Devi is a woman of contrasts. She is a mother of three living in a large joint family, and a full-time journalist with Khabar Lahariya, a weekly Indian newspaper run entirely by women. She is also a Dalit, a caste regarded as untouchable for centuries in the Hindu caste system. On one hand, as social custom dictates, she is expected to cook, clean, cover her head around men and eat after they have, while on the other hand she sits with village heads and questions them about issues she encounters in their villages. Susheela navigates the stark duality of her roles as a family-woman and journalist with great skill and perseverance.
